VLC – Tips and Tricks

Multiple VLC instances on Mac OS X

On Mac OS X you can usually start an application only once by clicking the application icon in the dock or in the /Applications folder. However, with a little trick you can have Mac OS X launch your application multiple times, to watch different streams at once or have one instance convert a video, while you want to listen to your favourite radio station in another instance.

  1. In case you haven’t already opened VLC, launch VLC by double-clicking on the application icon as usual.
  2. To open another instance of VLC open Terminal (/Applications/Terminal.app) and type in the following command
    open -n /Applications/VLC.app
